We landed July 10th in the late afternoon from Victoria. BC and touch based with other photographers to share experiences and images. I would have my little girls with me and wanted to make sure we got photos from the festival as well and took to time to review the Festival with our family. Mark Horton has these amazing images below.

Bringing small children to an epic outdoor festival can be a daunting family experience. For this event we had the specific goal of travelling from Capital to Capital (Victoria to Ottawa ) to enjoy some of SLM's favorite headliners and amazing talent, while considering how well the festival is managed to cater to the whole family inclusive of any age. In years gone by, as many experienced long time attendance shared with me, you could bring a blanket and park yourself anywhere to enjoy the main area. As the festival has morphed in size and popularity that sense of freedom, to just enjoy the music, has given way to a much grander event and some found that to be a challenge. This particular festival has amazing grounds and facilities for those looking for a variety of stages with musical diversity and plenty of opportunities for cocktailing and getting your boogie on.
The festival is ideal for mature children 10 and up or early youth, not as much for younger ones. (Children aged 9 and under are admitted to the festival free of charge when accompanied by a ticket-holding parent. The one exception is in VIP reserved seating areas) As with many other festivals particularly on the West Coast like Rifflandia ( Who promote Kidlandia where a whole section of the festival is offered for children with crafts and instruments in view of the Main stage at all times for parents to enjoy their favorite acts and have their children safe and away from noisey crowds) Bluesfest offers a private VIP area which we did enjoy and big screens throughout for those still looking to throw down a blanket, but we actually found this took away from the live set a little bit. I was fortunate to have been granted a reviewer pass for the Ottawa Bluesfest, with access to the shared photo link to be able to photo log some of the amazing moments over ten days with a highlight from us on week 2 of the event. Props to the festival for the brilliant and beautifully maintained venue throughout the festival, we felt safe and there were plenty of food services and facilities for all.
Worth a huge mention is the amazing, RBC Bluesfest Blues In the Schools program, initiated in two Ottawa-area schools in 1999 and has since seen tremendous growth. Each spring visiting artists/educators and local musicians deliver the Blues in the Schools program to thousands of students in Ottawa schools, contributing hundreds of hours of in-class instruction over a two-week period. Integral to the program is the mandate of reaching out to students and involving them in a universal form of communication; namely music. "Music reflects the feelings of the times. Through Blues music, students can learn how an oppressed people empowered themselves with song in order to cope. Our intent is to integrate students from different ethnic backgrounds and in this way teach harmony and coping skills that will lead to a more fulfilling school experience."
I hope we are invited back each year now to review the festivals progress, as the children get older, and continue our coverage of this event, deservingly named one of the top 10 outdoor festivals in the world !

Michigan’s Greta Van Fleet consists of the three Kiszka brothers, with a friend, Danny Wagner, on drums. In their ’60s-inspired outfits of fringes, feathers and bellbottoms, these fresh faced old souls played with the passion of Led Zeppelin and The Who combined, their energy. Focus of the night was on lead singer and ring leader , Josh Kiszka, whose powerful voice rose to Robert Plant standards. It was a great match for the Foo Fighters, solidifying the case that rock is most definitely not dead. Check out our SKOOKUMFEST of these artists coming up in Fall issue as well.

Jethro Tull — the legendary progressive rock act — took the stage.50th anniversary tour, being that he's normally "not given to nostalgia.")
Still, the 70-year-old didn't hold back on his return to the nation's capital, appearing limber and agile as he ran onto the stage, flute in hand, while an array of TV screens projected images of him thrice as young on Top of the Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test behind him.
WAR ON DRUGS headlined the second night, ‘Lost In The Dream’ is the third album by this Philadelphia band.

Ghostface Killah (above) hit the Black Sheep Stage on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at RBC Bluesfest. Fans filled the grounds to take in the show.
This Toronto native Shawn Mendes (Left , headlining on he Mainstag. His recently released self-titled album helped Mendes shattered records on Apple Music, with over one billion streams. Mendes has already performed on some of the largest stages — the Governor’s Ball Music Festival in New York, the Queen’s birthday party in London cementing this humble Canadian into musical pop royalty.
Earlier on a night of star-studded Montreal synth-pop duo Chromeo (below) turned the main stage into a dance party.

STRUMBELLAS

The Foos’ headlined Tuesday and as usual the band demonstrated its musical reign with a loud and brilliant rock concert in front of a sold-out crowd at RBC Ottawa Bluesfest. (Check out recent openers for the Foo Fighters im TO, with The Beaches the night before.)
“Hey, I know we’re at a Bluesfest right now,” hollered singer-guitarist Dave Grohl, who was had worked himself into a full sweat and rallied, “ I came here to play some rock ‘n’ roll. You want some rock ‘n’ roll?”
The crowd roared in agreement and continued to show affirmation during the he Grammy-winning U.S. rockers almost three hour set.
Hit after hit rang out of the gates going full-throttle on crowd favorites All My Life, and rallying the troops into a mosh , except to humbly banter with fans and introduce the band.
Blowing kisses to Foo Fans everywhere, the endeering Grohl promised to play at least one song from each of their nine albums.
In another lovely band moment, drummer Taylor Hawkins referred to his time touring the world with Ottawa native Alanis Morissette. That’s when he first met Grohl, he said, giving props to the beautiful city of Ottawa and Alanis for the opportunity that led to his long career with the Foos.
The band continued with favorites, Learn To Fly and The Pretender, two of the Foos’ most popular and radio-friendly singles, and they kept it up for The Sky is a Neighbourhood, one of the tracks from the latest album, Concrete and Gold.
By this time the kids and I had escaped the giant sold out performance to the ferris wheel while another set of amazing singles, including Monkey Wrench, Breakout and Best Of You, plus a version of a newer tune, Dirty Water, that featured Grohl’s daughter, Violet, helping out with the vocals.
The ladies on Vocals were absolutely brilliant and deserved the highest praise for their efforts as well.
Somewhere in the middle was an entertaining montage that included an inventive keyboard mashup of the Beatles and Van Halen, as well as snippets of Queen, the Ramones and more.
It was an amazing first night in Ottawa and a great start to our Family Festival review of this brilliant outdoor extravangza !

We had VIP for The Dave Matthews Band who was, for our family the absolute highlight of the entire festival. Having seem DMB perform several times at the Gorge in Washington there is nothing like this live show anywhere in the world for family fun and a guaranteed great time.
The esteemed and amazingly talented Virginia-based jam-band made their long-awaited festival debut with each bandmate’s supreme musicianship.
As a family we were fully prepared for the wo-and-a-half hour set stacked with crowd-pleasing favourites from an extensive repertoire.
“It’s been a long time, we’re very, very grateful,” the affable Matthews said by way of introduction. “I love visiting this very civilized country to the north of the one I call home. So much so, on occasion I’ve wondered about moving up here.
Their latest, and ninth studio album Come Tomorrow, peaked at number one after its release in June, proving again the band’s staying power and crossover appeal.
Part of that has always been due to Matthew’s front man charm and charisma onstage, on full display at centre stage as the band started up the new tune That Girl is You from the latest record, Matthews strumming his ever-present acoustic, his falsetto soaring above the bed of percussion and stinging guitar lines.
And Matthews has always surrounded himself with the finest of players to support his songwriting, the band’s membership now swelled to a seven-piece after the departure of founding member and violinist Boyd Tinsley.
Tinsley was missed most obviously on tracks Jimi Thing and Ants Marching, where in place of his usual fireworks of fiddling, the band had trumpeter Rashawn Ross and sax-man Jeff Coffin trading licks with keyboardist Buddy Strong and longtime Matthews collaborator Tim Reynolds on electric guitar.
But the star of the show for many in the crowd was the powerhouse drumming of Carter Beauford, with the enormous drum kit funking up intricate splashes of cymbals and percussion, or pounding out a furious double-kick beat.
The playfulness between long time friends Beauford and Matthews was breathtaking on the oldie One Sweet World, from a collection of their earliest recordings released back in 1993.
Don’t Drink the Water, had the crowd whipped up into frenzy and they continued to play off each other’s vibes on the funky What Would You Say, from their 1994 favorite Under the Table and Dreaming, now serving as a launching pad for Coffin and his searing sax.
The band played out their catalogue, with hits Crash Into Me and fan-favourite Ants Marching mixed with road-tested tunes from their new album.
Again and Again and Samurai Cop were our favorites of the new album played and the DMB, surprised all midset with the most memorable moment of the night highlight with a cover of Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer.
The kids were exhausted and we were all elated and needed a rest for the next 2 nights were yet to come and we had built memories for us all to last a lifetime.

BECK
Beck came to party Friday night, and this the L.A. troubadour delivered a dynamic performance touching on every phase of his eclectic career as a horde of fans turned Bluesfest’s sunfilled arena lawn into a massive dance party.
Becks eight-piece band appeared and busted into an opening riff of Devil’s Haircut and the party began.
“I’m in the mood for something soulful, a little bit moving. Something to take it a little bit higher.”
Beck delighed the crowd with Mixed Bizness, the disco-infused hit single from his Midnite Vultures album.
He instructed the crowd to “Giddy up” along to his ecentric and fantastic radio hit, Wow, from his latest Colors.
Up All Night, had those of all ages singing along and calling out for more.
Beck, highlighted his brilliant band along the front of the stage for some acoustic tracks and the best of his back catalogue: the beautiful Lost Cause, Sea Change, the haunting Blue Moon, from his Grammy-winning Morning Phase, were all the rage, while he geared up for the priceless take on Prince’s Raspberry Beret.
By the encore, Where It’s At, Beck had show his love for the Ottawa and really embraced this beautiful city and we were proud to be a part of this event too.

DEAR ROUGE
COLIN JAMES
Colin James brings the blues to Bluesfest
Colin James recently featured for his brillaint blues album (our interview here) brought his amazing talents to the last Saturday night of RBC Ottawa Bluesfest in 2018, feeding his rock-guitar-driven fusion to a massive crowd..
There was a strong turnout for both shows, but space was limited at the Sheep stage, and, with a contingent of chair people filling pockets of available turf, it made for an uncomfortably packed concert experience.
From James’ perspective, however, it must have been an amazing scene to see such an engaged and appreciative audience. He and his bandmates rose to the occasion with a solid display of melodic blues rock punctuated by a string of his radio hits.
Accompanied by a band that included Ottawa’s Rhaoul Bhaneja blowing his heart out on harmonica — his first appearance with James’ band — was absolutely brilliant on electric guitar and vocals, as ever the soulful songbird dazzled and his playing as poignant as ever.
FAvorites included Five Long Years, Why’d You Lie and Freedom and James also performed a new track, originally by James Cotton, that kicks off his soon-to-be-released 19th album, Miles To Go.
As per usual James puts on an amazing show and is well loved especially highlighted at this blues lovers music event.
One of the photographers we were luck enough to connect with on our journey was Lucy Sky who was at the festival and whom we will be highlighting on our PHOTOS tab coming soon and sharing her story as a child herself at Bluesfest and as a photographer now on site bringing things full circle. Check out our interview and feature in our upcoming Fall SLM issue out next month.
Lucy got these amazing snaps of DEAR ROUGE, (check out last months feature and interview here)
Dear Rouge is a pop/rock group from Vancouver. Danielle McTaggart , the lead singer, walked onto stage with this flashy large-sequin dress and was ready to rock.
The stage lost power af few songs in and after some time had passed and Danielle had walked the cat walk owning it and thanking the crowd for coming, the bassist came onto the stage and started to play “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes with the drummer joining him, and then Danielle and Drew rejoin them on stage ready to start rocking again. Dear Rouge’s performance was definitely an unforgettable one with so much stuff happening. We are seeing them next at the Capital Ballroom and they also had a stand out show at SkookumFest in Vancouver , coming up in our Fall issue as well.
The Strumbellas performed a stand out performance on the City Stage Sunday July 8, 2018, at RBC Bluesfest.
Though the Festival has evolved so much over the past few years, it was an amazing journey and I would recommend anyone who has a love of music and wants to share this experience with their little family to grab a few chairs and blankets come early or get VIP (and have assigned seating to your favorite artists) and " Go on and make some memories" as Dave Matthews would sing !
Blue Rodeo
Leave it to Bluesfest to come up with one of the most unlikely pop-music pairings having Naughty By Nature opening. With the little ones we caught the tale end of that show and geared up for Blue Rodeo ?
We learned later that Shaggy had pulled out and my favorite blue grass and soulful song birds of Blue Rodeo stepped up yet again.
We alos learned it was their 12th concert at the festival since 2001.
The weather was beautiful, the sound was terrific, and the crowd was in the mood for BLUE RODEO (Recently featured here)
Co-singer-songwriter Jim Cuddy greeted as he usually does like old friends: “So nice to be back at Bluesfest,” he said, getting into the spirit of the night. “Don’t worry we’ll keep the hip hop going up here.”
Canadians have grown up with these amazing artists will always remember a show like this and what a joy to share with our family such a great festival experience all round.
Kicking off the concert was one of my personal favorites Five Days in May, which we heard atop yet another ferris wheel ride and this was a starting point that drew the festival family together too. The brilliant version enhanced by the guitar work of Colin Cripps. The old favorite Diamond Mine, was extended with an intense keyboard interlude by keyboardist Michael Boguski, who also provided an accordion pairing to Bad Timing.
Part-time member the young Jimmy Bowskill, from the Sheepdogs added a range his sound to the songs, too, contributing mandolin, violin and pedal steel.
The contrasting, sweet vocals of both Cuddy and Keelor were strong and true, and they had some assistance from Ottawa singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards, who made a surprise appearance singing backup vocals on Try and Lost Together my favorite tracks of all time from these guys in the encore, joined by a chorus of thousands in the audience.
