It’s not a riddle it’s a stepping stone
I first heard Half Moon Run’s 21 Gun Salute and the intensely dramatic beginning to that song with lead vocals by Devon Portielje on the CBC at a live show, just a couple of months ago. It was meditative even ambient – and I was entranced –instantly inspired – including other songs like Full Circle.
Although I had not heard of them before, I felt it was a new mission of mine to share the gift of music with my family (including my preschool age children on some certain tracks (Call me in the afternoon even by one by one [x2 ]is sung around the hosue like a Christmas Carol substituting some words in for the obvious) and all my friends and social network so they too could enjoy this gift. That being said there was something sacred in hearing them for the first time. It was so different yet modern but there was a comfort in it that seemed to be missing in most modern music, and not felt by me personally, since artists like Bob Dylan, and Ballads from Simon & Garfunkel, I was introduced to in my youth.
That same day after discovering and enjoying the first album on iTunes (Dark Eyes Released June 2013) My musical journey with HMR led me to discover the second album which coincidentally was released that same day!
Sun Leads Me, Released Oct 23, 2015
It was a groovier sound and a more uplifting album than the first. It assisted in my creativity and put me in a greater mindset, having just emerged from the writing depths, after 10 years and creating again myself personally.
In researching the journey of the band, from recording in the desert (Texas) to California (For some seaside inspiration, leading up to the Second Album, and living in a dome shaped Oceanside house fit just right for a inspirational surf all day and late night magic sessions ) To experimenting in Europe in what appears to be a bit of a Rave Scene – road testing songs like Trust - it all lines up triumphantly.
I was lucky enough to experience this live set of troubadours on Dec 7th, 2015 at Sugar Nightclub in Victoria BC to a sold out show where some fans paid 9 x the door price just to get in. After staying late and meeting the eclectic mix of supporters, including a High School French Teacher and his wife who also thought their sound was as transcendent and made the journey to support them from up Island (Where most of the band hails from in Comox), to the sprawl of young woman who clearly were there for the "act" to the Lead Vocalist Devon Portielje who you could say in my excitement of après show and with my slight nerves "When a sip of gin saved an hour of speech - Nerve " I didn’t quite get the interview I thought I would - instead Briefly – you could say I found speaking with Devon clearly exhaustive from his end.
This band tours and plays almost nightly I would have asked him who "stole his Sunny Day" – but I could tell he was wiped. I asked him if the band would emerge on the Island again soon (Returning to play Rifflandia in 2016 like in 2014 but he didn’t commit to that.)
I spoke to his interests and would he get a chance to Surf the Jordan River on his visit to the Island but he said they only had 8 hours in the city and then off to Vancouver for the next nights sold out show at the Imperial.
This Band works hard – you forget sometimes when you haven’t seen an emerging act for awhile ( My last show was UB40 in the summer at the Commodore in Vancouver ) that to really put yourself forward you have to put in the hours (years ) on Tour (They actually toured Dark Eyes for three years !)
Just the fact that the Lead from the opening act for that nights show (Nick
Vallee from Folly & The Hunter) was assisting behind the counter at the merchandise booth after a long night and travel… well that’s a team of working mans bands.
More on the Music, there is huge variety in sounds on the current album, Sun Leads me – with the gritty Narrow Margins - There is a hint of Flamingo music that quickly folds into a somewhat Hip Hop beat – the sound not found anywhere else on the album, speaks like a story its very cool and soulful. It wasn’t played in the show, as I had anticipated – it’s a story of sorts that sounds very introspective.
Highlighting the further talents of Connor Molander (Harmonica being my favorite) one can find a cover done of the modern, Chvrches –The Mother we Share on the BBC Radio 1 (01/2014) then found again in the finale to the current live show touring with the Cover to Bob Dylan’s , Shall be released – seeing it live is spectacular - it was clever and mirrored the original art but with a tang of HMR.
There are confessional tones and a little sadness on both albums – and stories of what appears to be glimpse into the world of addiction – Music is a challenging business for anyone who has had this in their lives – this band however appears to live clean and is into a very healthy lifestyle from surfing to organic gardening mentioned to me by a family friend at the show about Issac’s Symonds (Mandolin extraordinaire and haunting vocalist) wishes for at organic landscaping book for Christmas.
I have heard Dylan Philips (Drummer – who has a great timing and a soulful sound as a professionally trained pianist – and always rocks the keyboard) said in other interviews that in terms of personal struggles that they have had the music guide them as a group – I noticed words formed around the struggle with being saved and loss of faith - perhaps even a loss of hope there – I hope they will continue to explore some further element of faith and that this translates to even more extraordinary music from this talented group, I am proud to call Canadian and will continue to share as their talents that will be sure to surprise us with further gifts in the future.
I clicked the you tube link on HMR’s website and watched some videos they had favored and found: TORA : and now I feel like the gifts just keep giving.

Plants and Animals is one of those Canadian treasures, that as music evolves and morphs into different genres and sounds always takes you on so many journeys, each one unique and special. Inclusive with that is their first group album in four years their latest project, Waltzed in from the Rumbling through label, Secret City Records.
We caught up with lead singer Warren Spicer who was gracious after just coming off and evening show at the Field Trip Festival in Toronto June 6, 2016 we chatted by phone.
Warren thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us today. Sunleadsme Magazine launched this spring, and we are delighted and grateful to have you with us. What a journey in researching your bands history and listening to each Album for the first time one by one what an Anthology just amazing, really beautiful music, truly.
First off how was last nights show at FIELD TRIP ?
"It was great actually , around Mid-day they suspended everything because of lightning storms, so good portion of the day and it looked like they were going to cancel the whole thing but then it cleared up was beautiful and we would have been really sad to have been there and not played so it all worked out really well."
Were you able to catch any others Artists performing ?
Ya I got to see Charles Bradley, (He's Great) yes he's amazing.
Secret City Records, described the original Parc Avenue as a love letter to the neighbourhood, lovers and friends who inspired it and NOW the new LP - Waltzed in From the Rumbling, is defined as “A Dance of Days” - I Love this – What does THIS mean to you AND for this Album ?
"We went through a lot making this record, both personally and as a band. There were a lot hard things and a lot of good things, we lost some family members and then we had kids, we took time off, we stopped touring and we worked on the album. It’s as much a document of the kind of music that we wanted to pursue and also a cathartic record for us – we did it as a way to process what we were going through."
Music is very healing that way it's like a journal.
"That's it and thats how we did it and at the that's what we decided to share with everyone."
This Album was worth the wait and what a blessing to have this time to Produce and Evolve your sound. Does taking time off to start families in particular having kids inspire patience with each other ? I know in the process of making this record Nic mentioned that you pushed each other and listening to each other more than ever before was a big factor in the success of this latest work.
"It was helpful to all be in the same boat, you know, it was a little bit random, I mean we didn’t have a band meeting to say we are all going to have kids at the same time it just happened that way. We’re not the sleeping the same way we used to be and were up earlier, so when we did get to work and we got in the studio we were really hungry to make music again. We took things less seriously and having children and other people to take care about more than yourself or your band just makes it easier to get the best out of yourself, you know. In the studio your not overthinking it, your reacting to what’s happening in the moment."
I have heard you say that when you were young you played piano and liked to improvise symphonies for your mom while she read upstairs. Having chilren yourself do they share your passion for music yet, do you teach them ?
"Yah, my son is three and a half, and obviously just being around me and the band, we brought all the kids to the festival last night that was pretty awesome. I am just offering it to him at this point, as this is what I do and it's always around as for whatever he ends up deciding to do, music is a choice. I will give him all the tools, and give him everything I can to help him make that decision."
I have read you enjoyed process of working on this album, that the Studio felt like an art studio v.s a recording studio and inclusive with that the video STAY with the interprative dancing, which was really cool to watch, I was wondering if you , Matthew or Nick have explored other artistic mediums or vehicles ?
"Music is the number one, I have always have been into drawing and artwork as a hobby. I usually get involved in some of the album design, not the front cover but the back back there’s paintings, the track list is a stack of books, I did that with a buddy of mine in Vancouver who is a designer, and the inside artwork is also stuff I worked on and enjoyed, but it’s not a real outlet for my creativity I’d say that usually goes into music."
Do you do most of the songwriting for the band ?
"The songwriting we do together but the lyrical content is my more my department.
One of our favorite tracks off the new Album, in particular, No Worries gonna Find us, there is a great line,
"I have spent all of my days in life Waiting for the time to come alive" ,
I really like that, it had me thinking a lot this week, it feels more like poetry than just a song is that like a mantra for the new Album maybe ?
"That song was a reaction to dealing with anxiety issues. I went through a period in my teens where I suffered from pretty chronic obsessive compulsive disorder, it was like trying to process that part of my life. It was taking a stand against, being crippled by anxiety or for that matter any kind of mental illness where you feel fragmented and that part of yourself that has to battle that other part of yourself. I think that voice that says I’ve been waiting to come alive is like, is like I've been waiting to be unified, where I am not split in half, I am not constantly trying to convince myself in my brain that everything is ok."
Music is so healing that way too so important, " I hope ,"
In your hiatus have you had time to mentor any other young Artists or do you have any future producing collaborations with other Groups ?
"Yah a bunch of stuff, I worked with a Francophone, a young musician, 21, his name is Ludovic Alarie , we did one record in 2014 Self Titled Ludovic Alarie, and then we did another one that still hasn't been released. That wa scool he was just a big Plants And Animals fan and got in touch, then we just started working together and now we're really good friends also, he kind of looked up to me to show him things, and he is amazing, That's the thing about the mentor-protege relationship, the mentor gets just as much if not more out of it as the protege does."
With a new bass player and Adele Trottier-Rivard (“Stay”), added to the group, she has a beautiful voice, how has this changed the dynamic for the live show you've had some time to work together ?
"We're still figuring it out, It's going really great, it gives us opportunities to expand certain areas. We are also trying to find ways to pull back also, there's something about the shows when it's just me, Woody and Nic, will play, keep the trio for a few songs, which is the way we used to do it when we first started. We needed to switch it up, just to keep it fresh you know"
Warren and I also chatted about the Festival experience and how great it was to be able to bring our kids to Festivals as they have become far more family friendly like the 60's and 70's style reincarnation. Both being parents we related to the idea of wanting to enjoy the family experience of the show as well. Warren is very cool and the music of Plants and Animals is very well orchastrated. The band, having known it each other for years plays wonderfully and joyfully together.
The concert in Victoria on June 17th was amazing. Starting with " No Worries Gonna Find Us", starts a whisper then building - it was a highlight of the performance for me personally. It was great to watch the electricity in the band come alive as the show progresses as well, seemingly timing the band in and orchastrating Nic seemed to revel in this role which was really amazing to watch. Royal Canoe was amazing as the opener as well and was grateful to open for them and sung their praises. They were another unique band and the duo complemented each other perfectly.
Cannot wait to catch up with the band again, hopefully in the Festival arena as well.
