Calming her

 STORY

It’s not a riddle it’s a stepping stone

I first heard Half Moon Run’s 21 Gun Salute and the intensely dramatic beginning to that song with lead vocals by Devon Portielje on the CBC at a live show, just a couple of months ago. It was meditative even ambient – and I was entranced –instantly inspired – including other songs like Full Circle.

Although I had not heard of them before, I felt it was a new mission of mine to share the gift of music with my family (including my preschool age children on some certain tracks (Call me in the afternoon even by one by one [x2 ]is sung around the hosue like a Christmas Carol substituting some words in for the obvious) and all my friends and social network so they too could enjoy this gift. That being said there was something sacred in hearing them for the first time. It was so different yet modern but there was a comfort in it that seemed to be missing in most modern music, and not felt by me personally, since artists like Bob Dylan, and Ballads from Simon & Garfunkel, I was introduced to in my youth.

That same day after discovering and enjoying the first album on iTunes (Dark Eyes Released June 2013) My musical journey with HMR led me to discover the second album which coincidentally was released that same day!

Sun Leads Me, Released Oct 23, 2015

It was a groovier sound and a more uplifting album than the first. It assisted in my creativity and put me in a greater mindset, having just emerged from the writing depths, after 10 years and creating again myself personally.

In researching the journey of the band, from recording in the desert (Texas) to California (For some seaside inspiration, leading up to the Second Album, and living in a dome shaped Oceanside house fit just right for a inspirational surf all day and late night magic sessions ) To experimenting in Europe in what appears to be a bit of a Rave Scene – road testing songs like Trust - it all lines up triumphantly.

I was lucky enough to experience this live set of troubadours on Dec 7th, 2015 at Sugar Nightclub in Victoria BC to a sold out show where some fans paid 9 x the door price just to get in. After staying late and meeting the eclectic mix of supporters, including a High School French Teacher and his wife who also thought their sound was as transcendent and made the journey to support them from up Island (Where most of the band hails from in Comox), to the sprawl of young woman who clearly were there for the "act" to the Lead Vocalist Devon Portielje who you could say in my excitement of après show and with my slight nerves "When a sip of gin saved an hour of speech - Nerve " I didn’t quite get the interview I thought I would - instead Briefly – you could say I found speaking with Devon clearly exhaustive from his end.

This band tours and plays almost nightly I would have asked him who "stole his Sunny Day" – but I could tell he was wiped. I asked him if the band would emerge on the Island again soon (Returning to play Rifflandia in 2016 like in 2014 but he didn’t commit to that.)

I spoke to his interests and would he get a chance to Surf the Jordan River on his visit to the Island but he said they only had 8 hours in the city and then off to Vancouver for the next nights sold out show at the Imperial.

This Band works hard – you forget sometimes when you haven’t seen an emerging act for awhile ( My last show was UB40 in the summer at the Commodore in Vancouver ) that to really put yourself forward you have to put in the hours (years ) on Tour (They actually toured Dark Eyes for three years !)

Just the fact that the Lead from the opening act for that nights show (Nick
Vallee from Folly & The Hunter) was assisting behind the counter at the merchandise booth after a long night and travel… well that’s a team of working mans bands.

More on the Music, there is huge variety in sounds on the current album, Sun Leads me – with the gritty Narrow Margins - There is a hint of Flamingo music that quickly folds into a somewhat Hip Hop beat – the sound not found anywhere else on the album, speaks like a story its very cool and soulful. It wasn’t played in the show, as I had anticipated – it’s a story of sorts that sounds very introspective.

Highlighting the further talents of Connor Molander (Harmonica being my favorite) one can find a cover done of the modern, Chvrches –The Mother we Share on the BBC Radio 1 (01/2014) then found again in the finale to the current live show touring with the Cover to Bob Dylan’s , Shall be released – seeing it live is spectacular - it was clever and mirrored the original art but with a tang of HMR.

There are confessional tones and a little sadness on both albums – and stories of what appears to be glimpse into the world of addiction – Music is a challenging business for anyone who has had this in their lives – this band however appears to live clean and is into a very healthy lifestyle from surfing to organic gardening mentioned to me by a family friend at the show about Issac’s Symonds (Mandolin extraordinaire and haunting vocalist) wishes for at organic landscaping book for Christmas.

I have heard Dylan Philips (Drummer – who has a great timing and a soulful sound as a professionally trained pianist – and always rocks the keyboard) said in other interviews that in terms of personal struggles that they have had the music guide them as a group – I noticed words formed around the struggle with being saved and loss of faith - perhaps even a loss of hope there – I hope they will continue to explore some further element of faith and that this translates to even more extraordinary music from this talented group, I am proud to call Canadian and will continue to share as their talents that will be sure to surprise us with further gifts in the future.

I clicked the you tube link on HMR’s website and watched some videos they had favored and found: TORA : and now I feel like the gifts just keep giving.

In the next feature story coming in January 2016:

After publishing our first feature on Sunleadsme Magazine highlighting Canadian Artists, HMR ( Half Moon Run     ARTicle ) at the end of  last year, I entered a You Tube video Portal of HMR favorites, and that is when I was introduced to the live Version of Calming Her, by Tora ... and I felt calm.

It didn't hurt that I was already on vacation in Maui, travelling to Lanai, nevertheless it became the background music to the rest of the holiday. It was essential to be in the present. Which is perfect because Tora derives it's name from the Greek word ‘τώρα’ meaning 'now.

                                                                                         The band

Jo Loewenthal (vocals/guitar/samples)

Jai Piccone (vocals/guitar)

Thorne Davis (drums)

Shaun Johnston (bass guitar)

Tora has come along with their Byron Bay Beats,  from playing at local Festivals like Splendour in 2014, where they won the coveted Unearthed slot, to fans of 500. Fast forward to this weeks announced Tour, starting this spring to ten times the crowd at venues like Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, with the likes of Rufus and Bob Moses. With the Europe and North American Tours over the past few years and with over 2.2 Million plays on Soundcloud they are our Featured Band of 2016 !

With favorites like , Get Like it, Jaigantic, Future Man and Eat the Sun (from their second EP Eat the Sun  (November 2014) as well as the newer tracks LATP (2015) and a couple of amazing covers and mixes, you will literally find a musical soul-mate here.

I encourage anyone who just loves upbeat and chill music to experience these Australian talents for themselves, and as Bob Marley said about his Music once upon a time and  which I magically find to be the same when I listen to Tora - their music also -  "Carries a feel".

I had the pleasure of being able to present some questions to  Tora, this week.

These are the responses from Jo Loewenthal, enjoy :

Congrats on the upcoming tour with RUFUS and Bob Moses in Australia & New Zealand.

How did this collaboration come about and are there any plans to return to Canada, perhaps the West Coast this time ?

Well actually our agent was contacted by their agent, they asked us to play and of course we said yes. The chance to play with both Rufus and Bob Moses is kind of ridiculous so we’re all really happy about that. Yes we definitely want to come back to Canada and next time we hope to include the west coast, at this point in time we aren’t exactly sure when though.

What contemporary music is the band listening to or enjoying right now - and how is this enhancing their sound ?

We all have quite different tastes, so our musical influence is very broad. Funny actually, because we have been listening to a lot of Bob Moses over the last 6 months so we are really happy we get to play with them. Foals, Galimatias, Flume, Kaasi, Taylor McFerrin,Disclosure, Lewis Del Mar, John Talabot, MKO Sun, Flo Morrissey, Nils Frahm, Sticky Fingers, Charles Murdoch, Ta-Ku, just to name a few. I think the music we have been listening to lately may perhaps result in a few more dancy Tora songs.

What does Tora love outside of the music ?  Thorne has a wonderful artistic style and the Jaigantic video showed some acting talents from all.

Outside of Tora, some of us have other music projects and also engineer/produce of other artists. Yes, Jai and Thorne make all the artwork for Tora but also make art as a hobby. We all love nature, so we tend to get out in the forest or on beach a lot.

How did the relationship and signing with Indica happen from the other side of the pond ?

One of our co-managers is from Montreal, he also happens to be one of the founding partners at Indica.

I personally love the bands unique sound and enjoyed the cover Twice (Little Dragon) any other covers coming out as single - Any further collaborations with Hein Cooper, as Shaun had mentioned he was excited to work with him in an interview last year ?

The cover we did of Twice was quite spontaneous, we accidentally started playing it in the jam room one day and decided we wanted to make a cover of it. So we spent 3 days working on it and then just chucked it up on Soundcloud. We haven’t planned to do any covers, but who knows if that might happen again. We love Hein as a person and we love his music so there’s a good chance we will make something together, perhaps sometime in the coming years, but it’s all about right place right time.

In my research I read that Jo taught Jai music – I would love to know more about how that relationship was mentored when they first met ? Has Jo any more plans on producing other Artists Work – I recently noticed his work (Pele) on Souncloud is this a side project?

Yes I was teaching Jai the basics of guitar for a few months when he was 10 years old, then 5 years later his father asked me to mentor and vocal train him. One thing led to another we decided to bring Jai into the new project that Toby, Thorne and I had been working on, which became Tora.
Yes Pele is a side project, but it’s more just an excuse to experiment with sounds that don’t have to be recreated as a live show. Yes I intend to produce other artists as a passion on the side.

What did the Band think of Berlin on the last tour – so many other artists are gravitating there right now   - and the band seemed very keen on playing there ?

Yes, we loved Berlin, one of our favourite places to visit but also a very nice crowd each time. I think the city is bursting with creative vibes, so perhaps that is what is attracting so many artists at the moment.

Are there an special rituals/traditions before performing before a live show – feel free to be specific ?

Not really, I mean usually all three of the singers will have a spoonful of honey, and we will have a little huddle just before we got on stage for any big show. Just to look each other in the eyes and connect beforehand, seems to help us feel like a unit on stage.

The band seems very tight like a family – in fact there are family in the band is this correct from my research ?

Yes, we are all very close as we have known each other for many years. Our friendships came before the music, so we have all played important roles in each others lives. There’s no blood relation within the band but some of us are stepbrothers.

As the members are still very young in the industry how does the group maintain/stay healthy on tour ?

(Laughs) that is a good question. It’s not easy when we are driving on long highways, our backs are sore and the truck stops don’t really have any healthy food, so that can be really hard. But whenever we have a kitchen we cook up wholesome meals together.

Thank you to Tora and especially to Manager Pat Davies for collaborating this interview, we hope that this article helps promote Tora over the coming months and that a return to Canada is imminent ! Good luck on the new Tour and we hope that some new tracks are born this year.          http://toramusic.com.au/social-media-links/

I love this write up:

Tora's music is a blend of ambient harmonies, layered rhythms and pulsing soundscapes. A beautiful homage to the new genre of Chillwave - (source) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tora_(Band)
