It’s not a riddle it’s a stepping stone

I first heard Half Moon Run’s 21 Gun Salute and the intensely dramatic beginning to that song with lead vocals by Devon Portielje on the CBC at a live show, just a couple of months ago. It was meditative even ambient – and I was entranced –instantly inspired – including other songs like Full Circle.

Although I had not heard of them before, I felt it was a new mission of mine to share the gift of music with my family (including my preschool age children on some certain tracks (Call me in the afternoon even by one by one [x2 ]is sung around the hosue like a Christmas Carol substituting some words in for the obvious) and all my friends and social network so they too could enjoy this gift. That being said there was something sacred in hearing them for the first time. It was so different yet modern but there was a comfort in it that seemed to be missing in most modern music, and not felt by me personally, since artists like Bob Dylan, and Ballads from Simon & Garfunkel, I was introduced to in my youth.

That same day after discovering and enjoying the first album on iTunes (Dark Eyes Released June 2013) My musical journey with HMR led me to discover the second album which coincidentally was released that same day!

Sun Leads Me, Released Oct 23, 2015

It was a groovier sound and a more uplifting album than the first. It assisted in my creativity and put me in a greater mindset, having just emerged from the writing depths, after 10 years and creating again myself personally.

In researching the journey of the band, from recording in the desert (Texas) to California (For some seaside inspiration, leading up to the Second Album, and living in a dome shaped Oceanside house fit just right for a inspirational surf all day and late night magic sessions ) To experimenting in Europe in what appears to be a bit of a Rave Scene – road testing songs like Trust - it all lines up triumphantly.

I was lucky enough to experience this live set of troubadours on Dec 7th, 2015 at Sugar Nightclub in Victoria BC to a sold out show where some fans paid 9 x the door price just to get in. After staying late and meeting the eclectic mix of supporters, including a High School French Teacher and his wife who also thought their sound was as transcendent and made the journey to support them from up Island (Where most of the band hails from in Comox), to the sprawl of young woman who clearly were there for the "act" to the Lead Vocalist Devon Portielje who you could say in my excitement of après show and with my slight nerves "When a sip of gin saved an hour of speech - Nerve " I didn’t quite get the interview I thought I would - instead Briefly – you could say I found speaking with Devon clearly exhaustive from his end.

This band tours and plays almost nightly I would have asked him who "stole his Sunny Day" – but I could tell he was wiped. I asked him if the band would emerge on the Island again soon (Returning to play Rifflandia in 2016 like in 2014 but he didn’t commit to that.)

I spoke to his interests and would he get a chance to Surf the Jordan River on his visit to the Island but he said they only had 8 hours in the city and then off to Vancouver for the next nights sold out show at the Imperial.

This Band works hard – you forget sometimes when you haven’t seen an emerging act for awhile ( My last show was UB40 in the summer at the Commodore in Vancouver ) that to really put yourself forward you have to put in the hours (years ) on Tour (They actually toured Dark Eyes for three years !)

Just the fact that the Lead from the opening act for that nights show (Nick
Vallee from Folly & The Hunter) was assisting behind the counter at the merchandise booth after a long night and travel… well that’s a team of working mans bands.

More on the Music, there is huge variety in sounds on the current album, Sun Leads me – with the gritty Narrow Margins - There is a hint of Flamingo music that quickly folds into a somewhat Hip Hop beat – the sound not found anywhere else on the album, speaks like a story its very cool and soulful. It wasn’t played in the show, as I had anticipated – it’s a story of sorts that sounds very introspective.

Highlighting the further talents of Connor Molander (Harmonica being my favorite) one can find a cover done of the modern, Chvrches –The Mother we Share on the BBC Radio 1 (01/2014) then found again in the finale to the current live show touring with the Cover to Bob Dylan’s , Shall be released – seeing it live is spectacular - it was clever and mirrored the original art but with a tang of HMR.

There are confessional tones and a little sadness on both albums – and stories of what appears to be glimpse into the world of addiction – Music is a challenging business for anyone who has had this in their lives – this band however appears to live clean and is into a very healthy lifestyle from surfing to organic gardening mentioned to me by a family friend at the show about Issac’s Symonds (Mandolin extraordinaire and haunting vocalist) wishes for at organic landscaping book for Christmas.

I have heard Dylan Philips (Drummer – who has a great timing and a soulful sound as a professionally trained pianist – and always rocks the keyboard) said in other interviews that in terms of personal struggles that they have had the music guide them as a group – I noticed words formed around the struggle with being saved and loss of faith - perhaps even a loss of hope there – I hope they will continue to explore some further element of faith and that this translates to even more extraordinary music from this talented group, I am proud to call Canadian and will continue to share as their talents that will be sure to surprise us with further gifts in the future.

I clicked the you tube link on HMR’s website and watched some videos they had favored and found: TORA : and now I feel like the gifts just keep giving.

Hannah Georgas

"Evelyn"A Rainbow in a Cloud

Hannah thank you for taking the time to chat with us. Sunleadsme Magazine is Issued quarterly to six times a year and we are delighted to have you highlighted in the Summer Edition  ( Both cheer ) ! We are on the West Coast of Canada, and I know you have called Vancouver your home and oasis, and have now returned out East how are you adjusting to being back in Toronto?

"It’s been nice, I am originally from just outside of the city and get back to visit my family a lot. I have been super busy, I recorded my record in Toronto, and before I actually moved from Vancouver I spent last summer working out here and then decided to make the move in September because a lot of the people I am working with are out here it’s been good it feels like there has been a lot going on."

It was quite a journey going back and listening to the "History of Hannah" this week in preparation for our chat today, First off the the midnight session at the Strombo Casa on the weekend, that was such an intimate setting. I loved the stripped down version of the classic "Enemies" from your Second Album (H: Thank you) It clearly moved the audience, what was that kind of showcase like for you?

"It was a lot of fun, it was George’s idea to have a midnight session at his house and  I think that was the first one that he tried for that and he also has the most insane schedule, George came from hockey night in Canada to come do my session afterwards. George and I talked about it a couple months in advance, he asked, "How would you feel about doing this really late night session at my house with candlelight and having fans and friends come and watch you perform your record?"  I said that would be fantastic I’d love to do it and it turned out really well. It was such a good vibe, his place is so set up to have full bands perform. Since I’ve been back I have seen a bunch of sessions, I watched The Kills, and it awesome, a really fun experience."

Your new Album For Evelyn, a few tracks available now on iTunes, Rideback, Don’t Go, Waste, and the full Album out on June 24th. This Album is homage to your 98 year old Grandmother Evelyn who clearly inspired you. "I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you" a line from Don’t Go, it’s intense a powerful song and the video of course also. We actually first listened to this track for the first time when I found out my 76 mother went into emergency, she has since recovered but wow, talk about aligning those moments which actualize, and the connection with family.  Tell us what Evelyn thinks about the album Evelyn?

"I think she likes it, we haven’t sat down and had a deep discussion about it, but she knows from family visits, when we are all hanging out around her, she knows I’ve titled my album Evelyn, She has lived in the same place for years upon years and my aunt takes care of her and we visit and she is a big fan of Q and her our session there a few weeks ago I hope she’s happy with it."

Maya Angelou recently quoted An Old African American turn of the century song " God put a Rainbow in the Clouds for me" I love this. Maya promotes that everyone should be "A RAINBOW IN SOMEBODY ELSES CLOUD" that’s amazing . ( H: Yah that’s great). Is that Evelyn for you, is she your Rainbow in a cloud?

"Yah, she is that, I decided to use that title towards the end of the process, once I finished up my recording it dawned on me a bit, she’s coming up on 100 years old and thinking about that, within itself was kind of so intense, and then what she has represented in my life so kind and so patient I’ve never seen her lose her temper she’s just always been an open door and wanting to help. When I reflected on what a lot of the songs are about on this record a lot of the lyrics and sentiment are personal. I go into anxieties and fears and I see her as someone who conquered that, she’s seen it all and been through it (P: Like a touchstone) Yah and I thought it was nice to acknowledge her."

It important to have the support of your parents as well, I understand your Dad was a piano player as well who inspired you?

"My dad was a really amazing piano player and songwriter I think that seeing him in his element rubbed off on me when I was really young."

Let’s talk about collaborations and tour dates our Headlining Khatsahlano Street Party in Vancouver July 9th, How did this come about?

"A friend of mine based in Vancouver asked me if I was around would I be interested in doing it and I’ve always wanted to and talked about in the past then I got the ask and I am super excited. I have attended it before it’s so great and just seen the attendance and the local people, Vancouver is my home town and it will be fun to back and play."

Your opening for City and Color this week and touring with Sam Roberts and Boy and Bear a really great Australian band, how did you link up with them and where do your tours lead you together?

" We are doing a bunch of gigs in the Eastern States, 9-10 shows, and an agent got us together."

There is a lot great music, coming out of Australia; it feels like their time in music, a lot of harmonies there, like TORA, highlighted in our Spring Issue. (H: Cool) We also read that you are big Frank Ocean supporter, Channel Ocean so great, pyramids, so great, what kind of collaboration would you lean toward if that opportunity presented itself?

"There are a lot of people that I look up to and would love to collaborate with, different styles of music and Frank Ocean and that record was my favourite record for long time over and over and it really inspired me. Who else do I want to work with, so many, let’s see... I love Sade, Annie Lenox, and Bjork there is such a long list of people that would be amazing to collaborate with.

Graham Walsh produced For Evelyn and Nicolas Vernhes mixed for this record, tell us what it was like working with them and of course Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother).

"Graham and I worked together on my first record and we have developed a really good relationship. He’s become a really close friend and somebody that I can really trust , he’s really patient and I look up to him. He is such a gear guy and he’s always finding really original tones and sounds and he has a bazillion synths that he plays around with and sequencers and I look up to him a lot in that way, we have developed a musical relationship that has inspired.

Ryan and I also worked on my first record and he is someone I can go to with a song and when I am writing things and he is very honest and has lots of suggestions and ideas that I sometimes wouldn’t think about, I really admire his sensibilities with that.

"I worked a lot with Graham, then I took breaks and went back to Vancouver to work a bit with Ryan then I worked with  Howie Beck who worked on my first record. Nicolas Vernhes who mixed my record was completely new and I found him through this record that I became obsessed with by this band Called Wye Oak, they have this record called Shriek, and I listened to it many times over again and saw his credit for mixing. I researched him and found out he’s done a tonne of records. War On Drugs (Lost in a Dream), Spoon, Daughter and Lia Ices whose is also incredible. So I just reached out to him and I was lucky to get a hold of him and he was excited to get on board. I spent some time with him in New York, I bounced around a tonne of places and tried to get it to a place where I was really happy with it. (For Evelyn)"

You have newer supporters in your performances now, a drummer, synth and backups ?

"I did a lot of homework and research on Toronto players and discovered my drummer, I ran into him a a few years ago at the Juno’s and I saw him playing and wanted to work with him. My Bass Player has been with me since I as playing open mikes in Vancouver and has been with me for years. Andrew is playing guitar for me, I met him through Graham’ who has a side project with his friend and Andy Shauf plays in another band called Etiquette. Adam is playing synth and programmer for me and he also plays with Lights, and I got his contact through another contact. I did a lot of research to find people that would be the right fit for the instrumentation that has came across on the record for the live stuff it took a little while to figure it all out."

Thank you for taking time to speak with us and hope you can come to Victoria soon.

"Thank you, I’ll be in Victoria soon enough !"
