It’s not a riddle it’s a stepping stone

I first heard Half Moon Run’s 21 Gun Salute and the intensely dramatic beginning to that song with lead vocals by Devon Portielje on the CBC at a live show, just a couple of months ago. It was meditative even ambient – and I was entranced –instantly inspired – including other songs like Full Circle.

Although I had not heard of them before, I felt it was a new mission of mine to share the gift of music with my family (including my preschool age children on some certain tracks (Call me in the afternoon even by one by one [x2 ]is sung around the hosue like a Christmas Carol substituting some words in for the obvious) and all my friends and social network so they too could enjoy this gift. That being said there was something sacred in hearing them for the first time. It was so different yet modern but there was a comfort in it that seemed to be missing in most modern music, and not felt by me personally, since artists like Bob Dylan, and Ballads from Simon & Garfunkel, I was introduced to in my youth.

That same day after discovering and enjoying the first album on iTunes (Dark Eyes Released June 2013) My musical journey with HMR led me to discover the second album which coincidentally was released that same day!

Sun Leads Me, Released Oct 23, 2015

It was a groovier sound and a more uplifting album than the first. It assisted in my creativity and put me in a greater mindset, having just emerged from the writing depths, after 10 years and creating again myself personally.

In researching the journey of the band, from recording in the desert (Texas) to California (For some seaside inspiration, leading up to the Second Album, and living in a dome shaped Oceanside house fit just right for a inspirational surf all day and late night magic sessions ) To experimenting in Europe in what appears to be a bit of a Rave Scene – road testing songs like Trust - it all lines up triumphantly.

I was lucky enough to experience this live set of troubadours on Dec 7th, 2015 at Sugar Nightclub in Victoria BC to a sold out show where some fans paid 9 x the door price just to get in. After staying late and meeting the eclectic mix of supporters, including a High School French Teacher and his wife who also thought their sound was as transcendent and made the journey to support them from up Island (Where most of the band hails from in Comox), to the sprawl of young woman who clearly were there for the "act" to the Lead Vocalist Devon Portielje who you could say in my excitement of après show and with my slight nerves "When a sip of gin saved an hour of speech - Nerve " I didn’t quite get the interview I thought I would - instead Briefly – you could say I found speaking with Devon clearly exhaustive from his end.

This band tours and plays almost nightly I would have asked him who "stole his Sunny Day" – but I could tell he was wiped. I asked him if the band would emerge on the Island again soon (Returning to play Rifflandia in 2016 like in 2014 but he didn’t commit to that.)

I spoke to his interests and would he get a chance to Surf the Jordan River on his visit to the Island but he said they only had 8 hours in the city and then off to Vancouver for the next nights sold out show at the Imperial.

This Band works hard – you forget sometimes when you haven’t seen an emerging act for awhile ( My last show was UB40 in the summer at the Commodore in Vancouver ) that to really put yourself forward you have to put in the hours (years ) on Tour (They actually toured Dark Eyes for three years !)

Just the fact that the Lead from the opening act for that nights show (Nick
Vallee from Folly & The Hunter) was assisting behind the counter at the merchandise booth after a long night and travel… well that’s a team of working mans bands.

More on the Music, there is huge variety in sounds on the current album, Sun Leads me – with the gritty Narrow Margins - There is a hint of Flamingo music that quickly folds into a somewhat Hip Hop beat – the sound not found anywhere else on the album, speaks like a story its very cool and soulful. It wasn’t played in the show, as I had anticipated – it’s a story of sorts that sounds very introspective.

Highlighting the further talents of Connor Molander (Harmonica being my favorite) one can find a cover done of the modern, Chvrches –The Mother we Share on the BBC Radio 1 (01/2014) then found again in the finale to the current live show touring with the Cover to Bob Dylan’s , Shall be released – seeing it live is spectacular - it was clever and mirrored the original art but with a tang of HMR.

There are confessional tones and a little sadness on both albums – and stories of what appears to be glimpse into the world of addiction – Music is a challenging business for anyone who has had this in their lives – this band however appears to live clean and is into a very healthy lifestyle from surfing to organic gardening mentioned to me by a family friend at the show about Issac’s Symonds (Mandolin extraordinaire and haunting vocalist) wishes for at organic landscaping book for Christmas.

I have heard Dylan Philips (Drummer – who has a great timing and a soulful sound as a professionally trained pianist – and always rocks the keyboard) said in other interviews that in terms of personal struggles that they have had the music guide them as a group – I noticed words formed around the struggle with being saved and loss of faith - perhaps even a loss of hope there – I hope they will continue to explore some further element of faith and that this translates to even more extraordinary music from this talented group, I am proud to call Canadian and will continue to share as their talents that will be sure to surprise us with further gifts in the future.

I clicked the you tube link on HMR’s website and watched some videos they had favored and found: TORA : and now I feel like the gifts just keep giving.

Yukon Blonde is an Canadian indie rock band originally from Kelowna, British Columbia. The band has been based in Vancouver since 2009. Western Canadian Music Awards, (Recording of the Year, - On Blonde with amazing tracks like "Saturday Night and Hannah - about fellow Vancouverite musician and SLM featured Favorite artist Hannah Georgas
Just a couple of weeks before the group would headline at Rifflandia 2017, with SLM Favorited artist MOBY (Our other Featured interview this #FALL2017 issue), and previous SLM Featured ARTists, Said The Whale, Hannah Georgas to name a few we chatted with Brandon Scott, guitarist and vocalist from Yukon Blonde. We chat about him from Vancouver on Tour, on the evolution of Yukon Blonde, the creation of the upcoming Album, influences and the Vancouver Music Scene.

SLM: How was your summer, did you guys make it to Khatsalano for fun this year I know you guys have headlined in the past?

Brandon: Summer has been great it’s been busy between shows and recording, and no sadly we were out East so we didn’t make it #KHATS this year but our friends The Zolas, headlined I heard they were great !

SLM: Yukon Blonde was part of the Canada 150 celebrations in Eastern Canada (Chingacousy Park in Brampton, Ontario, to celebrate Canada's 150th on Canada Day, July 1, 2017), that must have been so much fun !

Brandon: It was great, there was a Tragically Hip cover band , Little Bones and we saw Big Wreck, it was such a nice evening as well.

SLM: There has been such an evolution of Yukon Blonde to where you guys are at now a five member group tell us how you all came together?

Brandon: Originally with Graeme (Graham Jones – drums, vocals)and Jeff(Jeff Innes – vocals, guitar, chief songwriter) we have been together the longest over 15 years which is crazy to think about and we had a previous band called Alphababy.  I met these guys when they were part of other bands and we just all agreed on music and we thought we should play together and clicked so well. Over the years we’ve added members, lost members. Whoever can hang onto the ride you know. We have a pretty solid crew now with James (James Younger – bass, vocals) and Rebecca (Rebecca Gray – Keyboard, synth, vocals)

SLM: How did you guys connect with James and Rebecca?

Brandon: We’ve know James for a long time through the Vancouver music scene, he used to play in a band called Sun Wizard and he played in a lot of shows and friends records. He is just a really great fit him and Jeff clicked over a summer when we were looking for someone. He is just a really talented guy and he has done a lot for us on this new record. The keys are performed live by Rebecca Law Gray, also of Mode Moderne and Twin River

SLM: In researching your background, I found the very lovely, Georgia Straight “live set”, with you guys playing the very special Yukon Blonde hit, Confused,  and then there is this beautiful cover of “California Girls”. I was just curious why that unique track by the Beach Boys was chosen for this particular performance ?

Brandon: We are pretty obsessed with the Beach Boys, the harmonies and learning to break down those songs you come to understand the genius that Brian Wilson is. The melodies over those chords and things like that, it was a fun challenge. Acoustic shows are kind of weird for us now because were a synth pop band so when you strip it down we just wanted to have some fun with it. It was good for us to have a challenge like that.

SLM: Since the amazing Album, On Blonde, 2016 (Dine Alone Records) , came out you guys have put out these great 2 new tracks  "Crazy" and "Emotional Blackmail" on 10-inch vinyl,  what can you tell us about the origin of them ?

B: Thank you, we have gone through a few face lifts over time, we’ve been working on that “Crazy” song for quite a while now, and had it recorded a few times and demoed the crap out of it. Jeff is a very good writer and recording artist as well. He has a little studio on Galiano Island, so when the songs come to the table they are pretty flushed out and wicked and will give you a pretty good idea of what they go through, and then working with Steve Bays (Front man from Hot Hot Heat has worked with other ARTists featured here : The Zolas, Mother Mother) just took them to a new level, and we had never worked with him before. The chemistry really worked there, it was a lot of fun to see those songs grow.

SLM: The cover art for Crazy by Patrick Meighan is also amazing what can you tell us about that ?

Brandon: I am glad you like it. Patrick is a friend and known him for awhile. He is an up and coming ARTist who has been doing a lot of murals around town (YVR) He does a lot of cool phsycadelic pattern art, he was doing this mural one time with the spaceship in the background. Graham and I sat down with him one day and told him that the artwork was amazing and could he make the spaceship the focal point. It had a fun kind of Andy Wharhol /Stones vibe. It had a Glam Rock thing that was really fun.

SLM: You mentioned a new album amongst the touring life, of which you have a big North American Tour coming how is this all coming about?

Brandon: This has been more of writing year for us and not that much in the way of touring so it’s exciting. We are flying our producer out here this time to finish off the record at Monarch Studios http://monarchstudios.com/ in Vancouver at Tom Dobrzanski (Piano for The Zolas), place. So we’ve got Tom here and we really need to wrap this record up ! Then we will focus on the tour.

SLM: When will this album be realeased?

Brandon: Well I want to say the New Year, but we’ll have to see.

SLM: Any new ARTists you will be working with?

Brandon: That’s such a good call, we haven’t got there yet though.

SLM: Do you and Jeff still work on the side project High Ends and are you still involved in played bass in that project ?

Brandon: Totally! We haven’t done it for a while, but Jeff is always writing for that. Anything we don’t use he will probably keep for High Ends and that was a lot of fun. That is actually how we met Rebecca we hired her for synthesizers, and she was willing to drop everything and tour and that was a special thing and a special project, and we were able to keep her on for ukon Blonde.

SLM: As Vancouver music scene is getting so much attention we recently chatted with Ryan Guldemond from Mother Mother about venues like the Commodore (Mother Mother played 4 sold out shows there in March of this year) in Vancouver and the strong connection to this iconic place. Do you have a story about my favorite of Vancouver venues, you guys playing there November 24TH  with Rural Alberta Advantage ?

Brandon: Our first time in 2010 was with Plants and Animals (SLM 2016 Featured ARTists (here), it was a special night and a special place.  I also got to do a solo show there last year. (Brandon has also been working on solo work and released his debut solo album in January 2016 – a melancholic folk-flavoured album The Postcard Writer via Nevado Records.) It just means so much to be there, headlining and having your family backstage. It’s hilarious because my Uncle did go to that Nirvana show with the amazing Kurt Cobain back in the day. It is a very special room. I feel the same way with Massey Hall as well.

SLM: I Know Colin James 2017 SLM Featured Blue ARtists (here), made a reference to the vertical encompassing space of Massey Hall.

Brandon: It’s so overwhelming and you have to appreciate the moment when it’s happening because it goes by so fast.

On October 4th. 2017 the @yukonblonde Twitter account read I think this record is done. We are so thrilled for these Canadian legends ! Rifflandia Festival performance was electric, Jeff Innes encouraged the crowd to sing a long and the new tracks went off and the crowd embraced the band with optimisim and delight in their new music. Backstage at Rifflandia, after completing my interview with Moby I congratulated the band next door on their beautiful new music and wished them luck on their new album coming out and their upcoming North American tour, see dates below.
